Types/Styles of Grinding
While grinding, different styles are used according to the type of work. There are mainly seven styles used:
- Face grinding:
Used for grinding vertical shells. The workpiece is held on a table moving back & forth and side to side. - Spherical grinding:
Used for grinding spherical and taper surfaces. - Internal grinding:
Used for internal holes and spherical inside surfaces. - Plunge cut grinding:
For small workpieces, the wheel feeds directly into the job face. - Form grinding:
Produces specific shapes by feeding the wheel into the job. - Centerless grinding:
External grinding of spherical shells or taper jobs without a center. - Off-hand grinding:
For rough jobs needing less precision, done using bench or pedestal grinders.

i. Aluminium oxide (A)
Used on high-tensile metals like tool steel and alloy steel.
ii. Silicon carbide (C)
Used on low-tensile materials like brass, cast iron, copper, etc.
